Community Composting Program

The City of Orlando has been awarded a USDA Composting and Food Waste Reduction grant to develop an off-grid, solar-powered community compost facility and education center. This new facility will use a static aerated composting system that processes food waste efficiently without the odors and pests that traditional compost methods may attract, making it cleaner and more community-friendly.

The facility will be located at South Street Farm (626 West South Street, Orlando, FL 32805), an urban farm located in the Parramore neighborhood of Orlando and operated by the City of Orlando’s Office of Sustainability, Resilience, and Future-Ready.

Why South Street Farm?

South Street Farm already grows fresh produce for the community, and now it will also produce nutrient-rich compost to support:

  • Local residents with free compost for home gardens
  • Community gardens and urban farms in Districts 5 and 6
  • Programs that improve food security and nutrition in Parramore

Our goals

The Community Compost Program is about more than just food waste. It’s about climate action, food security, and community empowerment. Below are eight primary objectives to address these goals:
  1. Reduce Municipal Food Waste
  2. Divert Residential and Commercial Food Waste from Landfills
  3. Increase Rainwater Usage
  4. Generate Compost
  5. Increase Agricultural Producers’ Access to Compost
  6. Improve Food Security for those with Low Access to Food
  7. Enhance Operations of Community Composting Facilities through Evaluation and Public Input
  8. Engage the local community in Design of Composting Facilities
Looking Ahead
This pilot program will serve as a proof of concept for composting on a hyper-local basis in Orlando. By processing food waste locally, we can:
  • Reduce hauling distances
  • Empower residents to be a part of the solution
  • Build a healthier, more resilient food system
