Operation AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps members tutoring students.

The City of Orlando partners with AmeriCorps with three main programs: Operation AmeriCorps, OPASS and AmeriCorps VISTA.

The Operation AmeriCorps program is a competitively funded grant which provides funding for the city to deploy 24 full-time AmeriCorps members who work directly with 1,000 high school juniors and seniors residing in Orlando’s lowest income neighborhoods. The types of service the members provide include:

  • Tutoring
  • SAT/College Prep
  • Advocacy
  • Counseling
  •  Workforce development
  • Post-Secondary Planning
  • Mentorship/Guidance

Operation AmeriCorps members work with four local high schools:

  • Jones High School
  • Edgewater High School
  • Boone High School
  • Colonial High School

Orlando Partnership for School Success (O-PASS) deploys 40 AmeriCorps members to five city middle schools to impact the academic achievement of low-income students.  O-PASS AmeriCorps members serve at Jackson, Carver, College Park, Odyssey and A.C.E Middle Schools with the goal of addressing the unmet educational needs of youth through literacy tutoring and academic support; providing extended learning programs and engaging youth in service to the community. The types of service the members provide include:

  • Tutoring
  • Counseling
  • One-on-One or Small Group Academic support
  • Mentorship/Guidance

The City of Orlando also has a VISTA Summer Associates Program with the Corporation for National and Community Service. These volunteers work with disadvantaged youth in our community centers and partner organizations and earn a grant to put towards their continuing education or school loans.
