Apply to Become an Orlando Police Public Safety Cadet

Do you want to join the Orlando Police Department's educational program?

The City of Orlando’s Public Safety Cadets program is open to students ages 14–20. Cadets learn from Public Safety professionals, gain real-world experience, and develop leadership, fitness, and respect for the law.

Program benefits include national events, skills competitions, scholarship opportunities, and community service credits.

Step 1.Check your eligibility

To become a Public Safety Cadet, you must:

  • Be between 14 and 20 years of age
  • Be enrolled in an academic institution in 9th grade or higher
  • Be of good moral character
  • Have no prior convictions for a significant criminal offense or serious traffic offense. A criminal history check will be conducted as part of the application process.
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Complete a Public Safety Cadet application
  • Complete the required fingerprinting process

Step 2.Gather your materials

To apply, you will need:

  • At least two personal references (three preferred), including each reference's phone number, home address, and email address. References may not be relatives. Teachers, counselors, coaches, and employers are examples of appropriate references.
  • A scanned copy or clear photograph of your current transcript or report card.
  • A parent or guardian's signature on your application if you are under 18 years of age.
  • Your current health insurance information.
  • A three to five paragraph essay describing your expectations for the Orlando Police Public Safety Cadets program and the knowledge, skills, and experience you expect to develop through your participation. Also include how you believe participation in the program will support your personal and professional development and your potential long term career goals.
