Shingle Creek: Headwaters of the Everglades By: Jana Hart
I am where the waters gather
slowly winding through cypress tree shadows.
Their roots stain me dark amber
like a fine sweet tea.
Their sacrifice for roof shingles
long ago named me.
Today, I’m an urban oasis
for man and animal alike.
I shelter a menagerie
deer, turtles and birds of every feather.
New trails for cyclists and runners
line my aster covered banks.
All are welcome
to share my shade and cool waters.
I am ancient but fragile
protect me and I will be your palisade.
