Apply for a Tree Removal or Encroachment Permit

Do you need to remove a tree from your property or has the Permitting office notified you that you may need a permit?

The city issues tree removal or encroachment permits to protect the environment and make sure that only unhealthy, dead, hazardous or problematic trees are cut down.

Step 1.Determine if you need a permit

A tree removal or encroachment permit is NOT required if:

  • The tree is on residential property and if the property owner obtains documentation from an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture or a Florida licensed landscape architect that the tree presents a danger to persons or property.

A tree removal or encroachment permit IS required if:

  • The tree is on commercial property.
  • The tree is on residential property and the property owner doesn’t have documentation from an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture or a Florida licensed landscape architect that the tree presents a danger to persons or property.

Your property must be located within the City of Orlando limits.

Step 3.Apply for your permit

If you need a permit, you will need to pay a permit application fee of $25 for residential or $50 per commercial acreage.

Step 4.Mark the tree

After submitting your request, mark the tree to help our staff identify which one you want removed.

Step 5.Review inspection results

An arborist will inspect the tree in about three business days. After the inspection, they will contact you to discuss the results.

Step 6.Receive your permit

If you are approved, a copy of the permit will be provided to you.

Step 7.Remove the tree

You are responsible for removing your tree safely. 

Step 8.Plant a replacement tree

If your permit requires replanting, you will need to plant the specified replacement tree(s) within 60 days.

Step 9.Verify you planted a replacement tree

Within 60 days, let the city know you have planted a replacement tree. If you don't verify, you will be added to a non-compliance list.
