Establishing an Electric Vehicle Readiness code

Staff is proposing the adoption of an electric vehicle (EV) readiness code that requires a portion of parking spaces in new construction to meet current EV charging needs and prepare for future demand.
  • Coverage includes: New developments and substantial enlargements of commercial, commercial multifamily and industrial, where only new parking spaces are subject to new requirements.
  • 2% of parking spaces to be equipped with EV charging stations (affordable housing exempt).
  • 20% of parking spaces to be built “EV capable” for hotels and multifamily.
  • 10% of parking spaces to be built "EV capable" for commercial and industrial properties.
These changes were accepted by the Municipal Planning Board on June 15, 2021 and was approved by the Orlando City Council on August 23, 2021. The ordinance will become effective on January 1, 2022.
