WHAT:
On Thursday, October 19, 2023,local muralist, Ryan Semple, will put the finishing touches on a recycling-themed mural at the multifamily community in the Windhover neighborhood. The vibrant mural features the five types of recyclable materials; such as paper products, glass, plastics, metals and cardboard; as well as some of the common materials that residents mistake for recyclables. The visual art piece is meant to use the color-blocking technique to help guide residents on what should be recycled and upcycled in a colorful, simple manner.
Since the implementation of its Commercial and Multifamily Recycling Ordinance in 2019, the City of Orlando has been focused on improving recycling quality by proactively engaging more than 50,000 multifamily units and collecting community feedback from more than 200 properties to enhance sustainability outreach efforts. As a result of this outreach, each year the city has increased its recycling capacity by more than 9,000 cubic yards, which equates to 1,200 tons of additional recyclables collected. This new mural will help to further promote the city’s recycling ordinance and reach its 2040 zero-waste goals by continuing to divert tons of waste from landfills.
Through creative collaboration and grant-funded resources from The Recycling Partnership, the city also unveiled a mural at the Park Lake Towers Condominiums in the Lake Eola Heights neighborhood in June 2023.
