A Century of Black History Commemorations

The City of Orlando proudly presents the 2026 Black History Month Exhibition, honoring the centennial of national Black history commemorations. In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now ASALH) established Negro History Week—the foundation of what has grown into Black History Month.

For one hundred years, this annual observance has shaped how Black history is studied, shared, and celebrated in schools, cultural institutions, and communities across the globe. From early commemorations of emancipation to modern celebrations of creativity, resilience, and achievement, Black History Month continues to redefine the American narrative and illuminate the global African diaspora’s contributions.

The 2026 ASALH centennial theme reminds us that these commemorations are not only about remembrance—they are about transformation. They inspire us to reflect on how the study and celebration of Black history have reshaped identity, empowered generations, and strengthened the broader pursuit of equality and justice.

As the nation also marks the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, the City of Orlando honors this enduring legacy through a special exhibition at the Terrace Gallery:
