Cherokee Park

Landscape at Lake Cherokee Park featuring a curved stone garden border, a rounded shrub, and clusters of small flowering plants. Large trees draped with hanging Spanish moss create filtered shade, with glimpses of a calm lake visible through the branches in the background.

This spot along the shores of Lake Cherokee was established in the 1910s and sits amid a historic district.

The earliest recorded name of the lake at this park was Lake Eva. It was renamed Lake Minnie when John Poyntz and Minnie Hall built the first house on the lake’s western shores in the 1870s. In 1912, residents petitioned city hall to rename the water Seminole Lake. No action was taken on the petition, but later that year the water was renamed Lake Cherokee.

Today, Cherokee Park sits along the water’s edge with Spanish moss covered live oak trees along the lake and palms dotting the open space. Nearby families can be found jogging, walking dogs, and enjoying the green space and shaded benches. Birdwatching in this quiet oasis is best enjoyed during winter months.
