Apply to Become a School Crossing Guard

Are you interested in helping neighborhood children get to and from school safely?

The City of Orlando hires school crossing guards to protect and assist children walking and biking to over 40 schools within the City of Orlando.

School Crossing Guards start at $15.45 an hour and work a split shift of an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon.  Cash allowances paid for perfect attendance monthly.  Training and protective safety equipment provided at no expense to the guard.

Step 1.Check your eligibility

To become a school crossing guard, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older

  • Have reliable transportation

  • Work a split shift of 1 hour in the morning and 1 in the afternoon

  • Read, write and communicate in English

  • Be a safety-minded and alert individual

  • Be legally able to work in the United States

  • Pass a physical, including drug screen

  • Pass an agility test and complete the state-mandated training for School Crossing Guards

  • Be able to work close to traffic and in adverse weather conditions such as heat, rain and cold

  • Live near City of Orlando elementary and middle schools or be willing to travel

Step 3.We will contact you

If we select you to move forward, we will conduct a background check. This can take two to four weeks. If approved, we will schedule a phone interview.

Step 4.Prepare for more screening and training

If offered the job, we will contact you to setup:

  • medical exam including a drug screening 
  • appointment to complete your hiring paperwork
  • state mandated training
  • appointment to get your equipment, which is provided by the city
