South Orange Avenue Sanitary Sewer Removal and Replacement

Last updated on April 15, 2021

The city’s Public Works Department will oversee a sanitary sewer removal and replacement project on South Orange Avenue from Annie Street to Columbia Street. We expect the contractor to complete the project within two months. Please be advised, adverse weather and unforeseen circumstances may create delays prolonging the project.

The area marked in orange is the approximate project location area. Please use caution while navigating the area crews and equipment will be present once the project starts.

The project will provide additional sewer capacity for future development and improve the system to reduce maintenance and extend the service life. The contractor, Cathcart Construction Company, will remove an existing 15-inch vitrified clay pipe and replace it with a 21-inch PVC pipe with new manholes and service laterals.

Project hours are between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Should the contractor experience unforeseen conditions, or when the contractor will have to cross Orange Avenue in the Columbia Street intersection, they may work nights and/or weekends.

Should an emergency occur, first responders and emergency vehicles will have access to the area and entry and egress to surrounding medical facilities.

Motorists, residents and businesses will experience lane shifts, a single lane closure on Orange Avenue and no left turns throughout the work zone, as well as some road closures and vehicle and pedestrian detours. There may be times when a driveway or business entrance is temporarily closed due to adjacent work, but the contractor will coordinate with those effected to provide alternate access.

There will be an increase in noise during project hours. A sanitary sewer bypass system may be necessary to maintain continuous sewer service during the project. Should a bypass system become necessary, the contractor does not anticipate using the bypass system at night. There should be no interruptions in sanitary sewer service. However, in the unlikely event this should occur, please call 407.246.2213 to reach the city’s Water Reclamation Division.

The contractor will coordinate with the city’s Solid Waste Division to maintain solid waste, recycling, and yard waste collection. Should a missed collection occur, a property owner may call the Solid Waste Division at 407.246.2314, and the city’s Solid Waste Division will make another attempt for collection.
